The Islanders Hockey Club u18 started their season at the new Chelsea Piers facility in Stamford, Connecticut, for the Connecticut Yankees Showcase. The weekend started off with a dramatic 2nd half comeback against the New Jersey Hitmen. Going into the 2nd half down 2-0, the Islanders battled back with 3 goals in the 2nd to get the win. Nick Abbene, David Sweet, and Kyle Puzar were the goals scorers. Graham Hunt shut down the Hitmen attack and got his first win of the season in net.
The Islanders faced one of the pre-season favorites in their 2nd game, when they played the Selects Hockey Academy. The 1st half was a great hockey game to watch with up and down action, great saves, and plenty of hitting. Selects took over in the 2nd half scoring 3 goals, and adding an empty net goal to finish the Islanders off. Michael Mastrogiacomo played well in his season debut, making key saves to keep the Islanders in the game.
The Islanders won the next 3 games of the showcase, all by shootout. They beat the Connecticut Yankees, coached by Pat Lafontaine, with 2 goals from Zach D’Errico in regulation, and shootout goals from Danny Moynihan, and Tomas Parizek. Greg Polechronis was tested early and often, and rose to the challenge to collect his 1st win of the season. The next shootout win came against the Connecticut Chiefs, with goals from D’Errico, Abbene, and Moynihan in regulation. Pat Germain had the game winning shootout goal, and Hunt picked up his 2nd win of the season. The last shootout win came against Suffolk PAL, with goals from Sweet, Parizek, Ryan Conery, and Germain. Germain followed up his game winning shootout goal in the morning, with another one in the afternoon. Michael Mastrogiacomo got his first win of the season, in another quality start.
