On September 9, 2012, the participants of the Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk will take steps to change the odds for patients facing cancer.

Gentlemen,

As you may or may not know, my family is very close to a very special little girl who has touched our lives, as well as thousands of others, in a very unique way.  Her name is Avalanna Routh and she is a 6 1/2 year old girl battling AT/RT.  This is a very rare form of brain cancer and Av is the oldest living survivor of this terrible disease.  She was recently admitted to Dana Farber in Boston as the cancer has spread and she is in a considerable amount of pain.  My family visited her last Saturday and she was her brave, charismatic self and continues to show me and others how precious life is and we should really live like there is no tomorrow.

Last year the Monarchs walked for her and we were lucky enough to walk with her.  I am not certain this will be the case this year, but we will walk as a team on Sept 9 from Boston College to the Boston Common, a 5-mile journey together in honor of Avalanna.  We will also be walking in memory of Guy Lajeunesse, father of one of our brothers, Kyle Lajeunesse.  Guy was a tremendous husband, father, teacher, coach, and leader who passed away after a courageous battle with brain cancer on May 4, 2012.

The Islanders Hockey Club is more than just hockey, as we want you fully prepared for life beyond the game.  Part of what we teach is to do more for others than yourself.  This will be the first of several off-ice charitable acts we take part in this season.  The following link is where you can go online and submit donations.  Please help Avalanna and other children like her.
