Izmirlian and Sanford pile up a five points apiece in leading the Islanders to a 9-3 win over the visiting Portland Pirates in EJHL North Division action. The Isles enjoyed the comforts of home and built an insurmountable six- to- nil lead while rolling at Skate 3.

Yale bound forward Mike Doherty opened the scoring at 15:18 of the first period redirecting a Tommy Muratore point shot for a 1-0 IHC lead.  Izmirlian netted his first of four on the afternoon just after the midway point of the first period.  The power-play goal was assisted by Doherty and Sanford and was the end result of beautiful puck movement low.

Sanford scored on the opening shift of the second wristing a clean shot past Portland goalie Antoine Deganais from the left face-off circle.  Defenseman Joona Kunnas transitioned the puck from right wall-to-left wall in the neutral zone finding Izmirlian in stride crossing the offensive blue line.  Izmirlian drove down the left wing and curled to find Sanford in a soft spot in the left circle where he beat the young Pirate ‘tender.  Garrett Cox extended the Isles lead to four burying a Ted McCarran feed at 10:45 of the second.  Austin Surowiec also assisted on the goal.  Izmirlian scored his second of the game popping the fifth IHC goal over Deganais from left of the net.  Defenseman Ian Rodden crashed in from the left point to overload the Portland defense and teamed with Sanford and Izmirlian to beat the Pirate defense in the small area.

Izmirlian scored the sixth Islander goal and secured his Hat trick on the power play with 7:01 remaining in the second period.  He received a cross net pass from Sanford and wristed the puck past the beleaguered Pirate ‘tender.  McCarran also assisted the goal and it ended the afternoon for Deganais.   Shane Joyce took over the Pirate duties.

Portland star Haralds Egle broke through with a PP snipe with 2:50 left in the second period to make the score 6-1 after two periods of play.

Sanford set the stage for the Izmirlian’s fourth on the afternoon at 16:26 on the third period.  With the man advantage as a result of a Portland major penalty, Sanford wheeled through the neutral zone and into the offensive zone then found Doherty in support who passed the puck to Izmirlian at the net front.  Doherty increased the score to 8-1 with the second goal on the major penalty.  Kunnas and Sanford assisted.

Tyler Whitney went bar down from the slot to close out the IHC scoring on the major penalty and extend the IHC lead to 9-1.  Surowiec and Cox assisted on the PP tally with 12:12 left in the game.  Portland netted two late PP goals to finish the scoring at 9-3.

Mark Hochman earned the win between the IHC pipes stopping 24 of 27 shots.
