Jamieson commits to Northeastern University

Just about 30 miles north of Boston, Tyngsboro, Mass., is the home to the Islanders Hockey Club and their facility, The Lighthouse. There, Jamieson (from nearby Billerica, Mass.) has been Mr. Consistent for the Islanders, putting in 20 points in 27 games, never going more than three games without a point.

He also has had six two-game point streaks during the Eastern Junior Hockey League season, including a November stretch that saw him put up six points in two games.

Down in Boston, the Northeastern University Huskies took notice of his play and have welcomed the 1992-born forward Jamieson to join Northeastern’s NCAA Division 1 team for the 2013-14 season.

“Michael’s done a great job for us this year. He’s made a huge stride in his ability to compete on a day-to-day basis since last year, and it’s showing,” said head coach Sean Tremblay, who was also Jamieson’s coach last year with the New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs.

The 20-year-old has been a fine mentor on his line with ’94-born Zach Sanford and ’97-born Luke Kirwan.

“Both Luke and Zach are future big-time stars, and Michael’s defensive presence at center has allowed them to make mistakes and learn,” said Tremblay. “That’s how you have to play – if you play afraid to make mistakes, you’ll tense up and won’t be able to get anything done.”
Tremblay said that the Huskies showed up to many games, including the Islanders’ game against the Boston Junior Bruins at Phillips Exeter Academy.

“Then we had a great run at our showcase [in Fitchburg, Mass., in December], and things started to heat up with them,” said Tremblay. “They had him in over the holiday break for a visit and offered him a spot for next season.”

The Islanders played two games in the EJHL Winter Showcase over the Jan. 4-6 weekend, defeating the CEGEP St. Lawrence Lions (5-3) after falling to the Atlantic Junior League’s Boston Jr. Rangers, 2-1. Connor MacPhee led the team with four points in the two games.

Leading the charge: Michael Doherty was already committed to Yale University before joining the Islanders Hockey Club after his time with the Groton (Mass.) School.

“I’m just trying to get bigger and stronger and quicker,” he told USA Jr. Hockey Magazine in August.

While working on those intangibles, his stats certainly show how much of a help he’s been to the team, scoring 46 points in 26 games to sit at third in EJHL scoring.

Doherty had a stretch of 14 points in the Islanders’ eight December games.
