Annual game at Phillips Exeter draws huge number of scouts

ISLANDERS HOCKEY CLUB 5, JUNIOR BRUINS 4 Goaltenders Colton Phinney (35 saves) and Joe Young (44 saves) kept the teams off the board in the first period despite plenty of attempts on both sides. Tyler Whitney broke the tie 2:16 into the second period when he scored a power play goal from Mike Doherty and Chris Izmirlian. A Zach Sanford goal from Conor MacPhee with 15:37 on the clock stretched the lead to 2-0. Paul Russell put the Bruins on the board at the 6:02 mark when he scored from Will Messa and Kyle Nickerson. Tommy Muratore lit the lamp with help from Zach Sanford to regain the two-goal lead for the Islanders. With 4:52 remaining in the period and the Bruins on a 5-on-3 power play, Kevin McKernan blasted a shot to pull his team within one. Mike Jamieson made it 4-2 when he scored from Derek Stahl and Luke Kirwan. Kirwan then added a goal at 4:32 from Jamieson and Sanford to give the Islanders a lead that would prove insurmountable. The Bruins began to rally with 11:34 remaining when Matt Manzella scored from Kevin Duane. Duane closed the gap to one with 7:41 to go with an assist from Frank Vatrano. Young skated out for an extra attacker with 1:09 remaining, but the Bruins could not net the equalizer. “Colton Phinney was great today, especially in the 5-on-3,” said Islanders head coach Sean Tremblay. “Jamieson, Kirwan, and Sanford all had great games. Kirwan and Sanford, being two of the youngest guys in the league, showed maturity well beyond their years. Brendan Robbins and Garrett Cox also were very good today, and we got what we wanted from everybody.” Bruins coach Peter Masters was quick to praise the play of Kevin McKernan and the line of Kevin Duane, Paul Russell, and Frank Vatrano. Both teams will return to action this weekend at the Islanders Showcase at the Wallace Civic Center in Fitchburg, MA.
