It was the Kings’ Andrew Doane who opened the scoring at 18:26 of the first stanza.  Doane and line-mates were quick to capitalize on an Islander defensive lapse and broke in 3-on-1 and beat Colton Phinney for a 1-0 lead.  The game had the appearance of a ‘run and gun shootout”, but for the play of net minders Robert Levin and Phinney.

 

Both made numerous quality stops before Providence College bound Conor MacPhee converted a Mike Doherty feed to tie the game at 1-1.

 

Future Yale Bulldog Doherty executed a near perfect fore-check deep in the Kings zone when he angled, checked and won the puck from a SSK defenseman, then fed MacPhee alone in front for a one-timer to beat Levin at the 3:45 mark of the opening period.

 

The Kings took a penalty as the period came to a close allowing for Anthoine’s heroics to open the second period.  The cagey Vermont recruit maneuvered to the right of Levin and corralled a rebound to punch it into the net for a power play goal and game winner.  MacPhee and Doherty assisted on the goal. 

 

Phinney finished the game with 20 stops for the Islanders win and Levin stopped 21 in the loss.  The Islanders are back in action this Friday for their home opener against the Bandits.
